The Department of English Language Teaching (ELT), Faculty of Languages, National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad, is a leading centre for English language education in Pakistan. As part of a university recognized among the country's top institutions for languages, the department is committed to promoting excellence in English language education. The department offers a diverse range of functional, professional, and skill-based programmes designed to meet the linguistic and communicative needs of students, teachers, professionals, and international learners. Through innovative teaching methodologies, experienced faculty, and learner-centred instruction, the department equips learners with the language proficiency and communication skills required for academic, professional, and global success. Our postgraduate and professional programmes include the Advanced Diploma in English Language Teaching (ELT) and Advanced Diploma in English Language which support the professional growth of educators and language practitioners. The department also offers internationally benchmarked language proficiency courses aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), including English Level A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1, enabling learners to progressively develop their English language competence from beginner to advanced levels. In addition, a variety of specialized short courses are available, including: IELTS Preparation English Speaking Proficiency Course (ESPC) English for Business Communication English for Academic Writing Occupational English Test (OET) Online English Language Courses Recognizing the needs of working professionals and weekend learners, the department also offers Weekend English Programmes, including: English Level A1 (Weekend) English Level A2 (Weekend) IELTS Preparation Programme (Weekend) These programmes provide flexible learning opportunities while maintaining the same high standards of instruction and academic support. The Department of ELT strives to create an inclusive and dynamic learning environment where language learning extends beyond the classroom. I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of English Language Teaching at the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad, the No. 1 ranked language university in Pakistan and among the best in Asia and the world. You -students- are the department’s top priority, and our qualified and devoted teachers are committed to providing you with the best learning experiences. Our goal is to excel in English language teaching and learning by applying cutting-edge, creative, and effective teaching methods, thereby enhancing your communicative competence and English proficiency. We follow the university’s core values of inclusiveness, tolerance, social responsibility, creativity, integrity, merit, and transparency. The department offers A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1 programmes based on the Common European Framework of Reference for languages. Advanced Diploma in English, and Advanced Diploma in ELT are offered as one-year programmes. The department also offers different short courses of 8 weeks’ duration. They are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), English Speaking Proficiency Course (ESPC), Occupational English Testing (OET), English for Academic Writing (EAW), English for Business Communication (EBC) and English Language Course (ELC). These short programmes are to hone students' English expressions, advance their professional skills and prepare them for further studies and real life. The department has international and overseas Pakistani students from various countries of the world. It hosts students from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Iran, the People's Republic of China, Japan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Türkiye, Libya, and Sodan, to name a few. These students enrich the department with their different backgrounds and enhance the intercultural competence of the department by sharing their experiences and cultures with their peers and teachers. They improve their English proficiency by studying the English language in the department and interacting with their peers and teachers in English. We take pride in our students’ success and hope they achieve all their goals in the future.
